Katherine started practicing yoga in 1999 and fell in love with it from the start because it took her out of her ego, and for that that one hour, her “problems” completely fell away and she left feeling better about herself and what she had to do. And in that moment, she knew that she could change things, that she could shift her perception, and that it had nothing to do with her life situation or anything/anyone else. And in that recognition, she experienced freedom and grace. What began as an addendum to other activities (weightlifting, cardio machines), with time, came into fuller focus as she noted the physical benefits of strength and flexibility, but, more importantly, noticed that she was actually happy during and, at least, immediately after class. It felt good right down to the cells—something the gym had never given her.
Katherine undertook her 200 hour Yoga Alliance certification training mainly just to learn more about yoga, but because yoga had helped her in so many different ways and brought a great deal of joy and healing into her life, she decided to share that by teaching. Her practice flourished when she turned up the music, danced (and sometimes sang), and just watched the body in action, witnessed how her mind reacted to it, and discovered the humility and the willingness to experience each pose, each day. She learns something new and is challenged every day in that practice, and tries to impart that in every class she teaches. She also tries to give back some of the joy she has experienced through yoga and the possibility that it all can viewed with a lighter heart: once you realize how utterly silly it is to stand on one leg upside down, it is pretty hard to swear just because you topple over.
